1. Before you start
Before you start to share data within the Internet, make sure you have completed the following tasks:
- Hardware installation for Synology DiskStation.
- Software installation for Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM, web-based operating system of DiskStation).
- Create iSCSI LUN and Targets (see here).
- Install VMware vSphere Client on your PC.
- Setup a VMware ESXi host.

2. Mount iSCSI Targets on VMware ESXi
This section will help to mount iSCSI Targets on the Synology NAS to the VMware ESXi Hypervisor.
- Login your VMware ESXi by vSphere Client.
Mount iSCSI Targets: - Go to Configuration tab.
- Click on Storage Adapters.
- Select the iSCSI Software Adapter.
- Click Properties.
- Enable the iSCSI initiator.
- Once the iSCSI Initiator is enabled, click on Dynamic Discovery.
- Under Dynamic Discovery:
- Click on Add.
- Enter the primary IP address of the Synology NAS.
- Rescan the Host Bus Adapter.
- The iSCSI Initiator has detected the targets on the Synology NAS.
3. Setup iSCSI LUN as VMware Datastore
This section of the article will help you to setup iSCSI LUN as a VMware datastore.
- Login your VMware ESXi by vSphere Client.
- Under Configuration tab:
- Click on Storage.
- Click on Add Storage.
- User Add Storage:
- Select Disk/LUN.
- Click on Next.
- In the next page:
- Find the iSCSI target.
- Click on Next.
- Review the current disk layout and click Next.
- Enter a new datastore name for this new storage.
- Select a block size to use for this new storage.
- Click on Finish to confirm final configuration settings.
- The new datastore has been added and is ready to use.
