Green Data Center: Energy Efficiency in Digital World

Cloud computing should have reduced worldwide data center energy usage. It’s possible only if those cloud data centers are as efficient as they can be. Cloud computing and colocation data centers are friendlier than the onsite IT infrastructure. Datacenters can supply the same IT services while consuming less energy.
 
According to Pike Research, cloud computing can decrease the IT carbon footprint by as much as 38%. Green data centers provide many environmental and cost-effective advantages. Investing in a new-generation design for a green data center might be costly at first, it would pay off in the long term. The cost of electricity and fuel necessary to power the data centers has been considerably lowered because the data centers mostly use renewable sources of energy. Furthermore, the green data center implemented methods to recycle e-waste from the data centers, resulting in a new source of money.

Supermicro conducted a survey of more than 5,000 data center specialists last 2019. The number of enterprises working with authorized recycling services had fallen by 14% year over year. This is while the number of businesses recycling their own hardware had decreased by 5%. These are not industry trends to be proud of. The potential for improvement in this area must be prioritizedDatacenter operators may reduce worldwide e-waste by as much as 80% by improving hardware refresh cycles, according to the same study.

ICT for Climate Change: Power Usage Effectiveness







Salah satu pembahasan menarik dalam webinar kami terakhir, AKCP Reducing Climate Change adalah membahas PUE di lingkungan data center

Untuk yang memiliki, menjalankan data center, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ini menjadi salah satu titik ukur yang penting dalam mengukur penggunaan energi. 

Energi ini adalah energi yang digunakan perangkat, dan energi fasilitas data center. Semua ini diukur dengan rumusan :

Standar PUE ini telah menjadi standar dalam ISO/IEC 30134-2:2016. Lalu bagaimana AKCP mengukurnya ?

Nah, yang dilakukan ada beberapa cara. Kita bahas yang paling umum, mengukur daya.

Coba pastikan semua daya yang digunakan di data center.

Pertama, cek berapa kapasitas daya dari keluaran UPS yang kita gunakan. Kita bisa melihat dari parameter yang ada.

Kedua, cek berapa kapasitas daya fasilitas, berapa daya AC atau AC Presisi, daya lampu dll.

Masukkan ke dalam rumusan diatas. Lihat berapa score nya. 

Idealnya adalah 1.0 . Kenyataannya rata-rata 1.3 - 2.0 . Tinggal kita pastikan dimana kita bisa menghemat energi yang ada. 


Banyak data center yang masih menggunakan lampu TL, bukan lampu LED. Maka bisa ganti semua lampu kita dengan lampu hemat energi. Bila tidak digunakan bisa dimatikan. 

Banyak data center gunakan AC split, bukan AC presisi. Bila rak anda lebih dari 3, sebaiknya pikirkan mulai pakai AC presisi, bila budget dan tempat memadai. 

Ada juga pembahasan mengenai suhu dalam webinar kemarin, melihat suhu yang dari pendingin (CRAC) ke rak, dan keluar dari rak. Ini diukur semua dengan ACKP.
