Apple, Microsoft, VMware: Everyone's building open-source software

Summary:⁠ In the opening keynote at LinuxCon, Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin observed that open source is now key to how all companies use to develop software—and yes he meant Apple, Microsoft, and VMware as well.

Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation's leader sees Apple, Microsoft, and VMware using open-source development.

Why is it important for businesses to master open source? Zemlin said it's because "Software is the future of IT. Hardware is important to enable software, but what I mean that the value that end-users sees from technology increasingly comes from the software."

He then showed a slide of half-a-dozen smartphones that were turned off and pointed out that even with a very technical crowd, "If you just look at the hardware of smartphones, you can't tell them apart, it's only when you turn them on that you can tell the differences."

Zemlin said that all successful tech companies are now using and contributing to open source communities. "Besides the usual suspects--Amazon, Google, IBM-- there are companies that you may not think of as being big open-source companies, even competitors, now admit that they must participate in open source."

Like who? Zemlin pointed out that "Microsoft is now supporting Linux in their cloud. Not because they want to, but because their customers demand it."

In addition, VMware just acquired Nicira, an important OpenStack. Indeed, VMware, a  champion of the closed virtualization and cloud position, has just submitted an application to join the OpenStack Foundation.

Even Apple, Zemlin observed "one of the most closed companies in the world, uses a lot of open source. If you look inside the Apple's iPhone legal agreements you'll find GPL code there." In addition, "Apple bought CUPS (Common Unix Printing System), an open-source project" a few years ago. So while Apple may be closed, it certainly understands the value of open source. Indeed, Mac OS X is built on a foundation of Darwin/Mach—BSD Unix-based operating systems.

Zemlin's not the only one seeing this marriage of open-source and corporate IT. Tim Yeaton CEO of Black Duck Software recently blogged, "Corporate IT has made extensive use of open source code for years. Gartner reported that on average, 29% of deployed code was open source, and that by 2015 at least 95% of mainstream IT organizations will leverage open source solutions within mission critical software deployments. So while open source code is being widely adopted, it's only recently that corporate IT became interested in the efficiencies of the open, collaborative creation process itself. Projects spin up quickly and attract contributors organically without advertising or hiring; large distributed teams produce high quality innovative code with little overhead; and it's all done completely in the open."

"Open collaborative development via communities is widely understood and accepted, and corporate IT organizations are realizing that these characteristics can be applied to improve their internal development as well, and many are looking to apply them to enhance their own internal methods, typically in conjunction with adopting agile or lean methodologies."

Prof Nelson Tansu

Professor muda di Amerika ini bernama Nelson Tansu, lahir di Medan (Sumatera Utara) pada tahun 1977. Ia seorang pakar nanoteknologi dan optoelektronika asal Indonesia yang menjadi tenure-tracked Assistant Professor di Universitas Lehigh (Lehigh University) pada usia 25 tahun (sejak Juli 2003). Tansu menyisihkan lebih dari 300 doktor untuk mendapatkan jabatan Assistant Professor tersebut di Universitas Lehigh sejak Juli 2003.

Prof. Nelson memiliki pesan-pesan untuk generasi muda, khususnya bagi generasi muda di negara kelahirannya, Indonesia. Mari kita simak pesan-pesannya dibawah ini:

1. "Menurut saya, keberhasilan bukanlah berasal dari tingkat kepintaran. Saya sendiri tidak pernah merasa bahwa saya sendiri lebih cerdas atau lebih dari yang lainnya terutama orang-orang Indonesia lainnya. Sebenarnya menurut saya, saya biasa-biasa saja tetapi saya memang orang yang rajin dan kerja keras. Jadi, menurut saya, kerja keras dan fokus yang luar biasa adalah kunci dari keberhasilan. Di samping kerja keras dan fokus, saya juga mendapat dukungan dari istri (Adela Gozali Yose) dan keluarga saya untuk dapat memberikan kontribusi sampai sekarang."

2. "Banyak sekali talenta-talenta terbaik dari Indonesia yang mungkin jauh lebih bagus dan telah berkontribusi dengan banyak bagi Indonesia dan dunia. Semoga, saya sangat berharap bahwa banyak generasi-generasi muda Indonesia akan terus memiliki motivasi untuk terus bekerja dengan giat dan fokus untuk dapat memberikan kontribusi kepada pembangunan bangsa dalam jangka panjang di kemudian hari."

3. "Saya sendiri sebenarnya masih jauh dari banyak talenta-talenta terbaik Indonesia yang telah berhasil di tingkat dunia. Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa yang besar yang harus mampu untuk memberikan kontribusi besar untuk tingkat dunia. Dengan adanya generasi muda bertalenta tinggi di Indonesia (yang menurut saya, banyak yang lebih luar biasa dari kita-kita yang senior), maka saya yakin Indonesia dapat menjadi negara maju dengan masyarakat yang sejahtera dan juga dapat memberikan kontribusi yang luar biasa di tingkat dunia."

"Sewaktu pertemuan di I-4 (Ikatan Ilmuwan Indonesia Internasional) di Jakarta bulan Desember 2010 , saya benar-benar sangat impressed dengan enthusiasm dari generasi muda yang ingin Indonesia maju. Dengan semangat yang demikian positif dan saling mendukung di antara kalangan ilmuwan Indonesia, maka saya yakin Indonesia akan maju dan generasi muda akan terus berkembang melebihi generasi sekarang".

6. "Di antara kalangan ilmuwan Indonesia, banyak di antara mereka yang dapat menjadi sukses jika mendapatkan kesempatan yang cukup. Jadi semoga di kemudian hari, bangsa and negara Indonesia, dan masyarakat Indonesia, dapat memberikan dukungan yang secukupnya bagi ilmuwan generasi muda sebanyak-banyaknya."

Ada beberapa yang saya kenal (atau tahu) sejak beberapa tahun ini yang merupakan ilmuwan yang bagus dari Indonesia yang berkarir di berbagai Negara (termasuk Indonesia) yang harusnya bisa menjadi role model untuk anak-anak muda kita, yaitu: Bapak Yohanes Surya, Bapak Ken Soetanto, Bapak Yow Pin Lim, Bapak Oki Gunawan, Bapak Hery S. Djie, Bapak Jeffrey Rufinus, Bapak Yanuar Nugroho, Ibu Desi Anwar, Ibu Etin Anwar, Bapak Terry Mart, Bapak Wilson Wenas, Bapak Jhony Setiawan, Bapak Nasir Tamara, Bapak Andreas Raharso, Bapak Rudy Raymond, Bapak Khoirul Anwar, Ibu Rose Amal, Bapak Romulus Godang, Bapak L. T. Saya kira mereka-mereka ini adalah yang telah menunjukkan kemampuan dan dedikasi tinggi, dan kita semua (termasuk saya sendiri terutama, dan generasi muda lainnya) dapat terinspirasi untuk belajar dari mereka-mereka yang memiliki kemampuan luar biasa dan dedikasi luar biasa di bidang mereka masing-masing."

Prof. Nelson Tansu lahir pada Oktober 1977 di Medan (Sumatera Utara), ia menerima gelar BS dan gelar Ph.D. dari University of Wisconsin-Madison Mei 1998 dan Mei 2003. Dr. Tansu memulai karir sebagai Profesor Asisten (Assistant Professor) termuda di Lehigh University pada Juli 2003 (umur 25). Dr Tansu menjabat sebagai Profesor Asisten (Assistant Professor) (Juli 2003 – April 2007) dan Peter C. Rossin Assistant Professor (April 2007 – April 2009) di Departemen Teknik Elektro dan Komputer (ECE) dan Pusat Teknologi Optik (COT) di Lehigh University. Ia menjadi professor dengan tenure (Associate Professor) di Lehigh University pada Mei 2009. Sejak Mei 2010 sampai sekarang, Dr Tansu telah menjadi Class of 1961 Associate Professor (dengan tenure) di Departemen Teknik Elektro dan Komputer (ECE) dan Pusat Teknologi Optik(COT) di Lehigh University. Dr Tansu adalah memiliki beberapa penghargaan dari Universitas Wisconsin-Madison dan Lehigh University, dan dia juga telah mempublikasikan riset mereka di beberapa-beberapa jurnal internasional. Tentu saja saya tidak menganjurkan mahasiswa untuk keluar kuliah karena keluarganya pasti marah, di sisi lain sebenarnya keluarga juga merupakan  co founder dari apapun bisnismu. Ijazah kuliah juga merupakan safety net bagi entrepreneur yang gagal berbisnis.

 Tidak cukup mengajarkan dan mendorong mahasiswa untuk menjadi expert di bidang yang ia cintai.

Padahal menjadi expert di bidang yang disukai adalah basic penting dari entrepreneurship.

Karena jika seseorang mencintai bidang tersebut, maka ia akan bekerja siang malam untuk menjalankannya. Mayoritas waktu dari hidupnya akan digunakan untuk mengejar impiannya.

Karena banyak waktunya digunakan di bidang tersebut, akan secara natural untuknya ter-connect dengan para expert lain bidang tersebut dan melihat masalah di situ.

Bukankah impian setiap entrepreneur untuk memecahkan masalah di bidang yang ia cintai ?

We're in the midst of an incredible megatrend. We know it and we're living it. We all love our mobile devices; whether it's our laptop (yes, I'm sitting at my kids swim class typing away for work), our mobile phone (I'm getting texts on what's for dinner), or our tablet (where Draw Something awaits me). Apple recently stated that they have sold more than 67 million iPads in the recent 18 months. That is more than all the Mac sales in the past 27 years. There's no denying it:  we are in the midst of an incredible megatrend—a mobile megatrend.

But what does this mean to businesses?From the IT perspective, the role of the mobile devices has transformed from a luxury item used for personal communication and entertainment to an integral tool for employee productivity. Mobile devices are now the main platform for work (laptop or tablet) and the primary medium for corporate contact (mobile phone). With employees bringing an average of two mobile devices each (laptop/tablet + mobile phone), companies can reap the benefits of new business opportunities and more productive employees.

Sound good? There's a caveat. In order to harness all that potential, you have to overcome the Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) challenge: you need reliable, pervasive wireless coverage to ensure the wireless bandwidth and link-reliability required to support the increased number of mobile devices in the workplace.

So you're the IT administrator for a mid-sized company and you're thinking, "But I already have wireless coverage. I'm covered, aren't I?"

Consider a medium sized business with a legacy 802.11a/b/g wireless infrastructure and an average of two mobile devices per employee. In this scenario, each device is sharing 802.11a/g's 54Mbps bandwidth per access point. What's worse, 802.11b access points only supports 11Mbps. How are you going to provide the necessary connectivity required to support the proliferation of mobile devices in your workplace when you're limited by bandwidth?

It's time for Mid-market to move to 802.11n. 5 Hal Penting dalam Menyusun "Motivation Letter"

KOMPAS.com - Motivation letter atau pernyataan motivasi diri menjadi aspek penting dalam memenangi beasiswa. Pernyataan ini menunjukkan kemampuan Anda untuk meyakinkan penyelenggara bahwa Andalah kandidat yang tepat untuk menerima beasiswa yang ditawarkan.

Pernyataan motivasi diri dan tujuan Anda untuk belajar menjadi pintu bagi penyelenggara untuk menilai ke dalam diri Anda mengenai pemahaman dan tekad Anda untuk melanjutkan studi serta besarnya keinginan di balik tekad itu. Pasalnya, studi pascasarjana bukan untuk pemalas. Maka, simak lima hal penting yang harus Anda perhatikan saat menyusun motivation letter.

1. Dibutuhkan fokus dan tekad yang tak lemah untuk mengejar gelar yang lebih tinggi itu. Penyelenggara beasiswa akan memeriksa motivation letter Anda dengan seksama untuk menilai kesungguhan, kredibilitas dan keuletan Anda melalui pernyataan yang Anda sampaikan selain pertanyaan standar dalam aplikasi terkait keinginan dan komitmen belajar Anda, pengalaman sesuai bidang yang Anda miliki, serta rencana setelah Anda meraih gelar tersebut.

Penyelenggara tentu akan memilih kandidat yang memiliki tujuan yang jelas, sesuai dengan kepentingan riset atau studi dan pengalaman yang lebih hebat. Bahkan, meski Anda telah membuatnya sesuai substansi dan sudah menguraikan daftar prestasi Anda, penyelenggara bisa saja mengulik hal unik lainnya.

2. Meskipun penting untuk fokus pada tujuan program yang Anda pilih, jangan sampai membuat pernyataan Anda menjadi membosankan. Untuk membuat berbeda, Anda boleh menambahkan informasi unik yang relevan, misalnya membahas sedikit  ide yang relevan dengan bidang Anda untuk menunjukkan Anda "wah" tetapi tetap intelektual.

Salah satu cara yang efektif adalah dengan menuangkannya dalam pembukaan pernyataan motivasi diri Anda, dan itu memungkinkan Anda untuk berani menuliskan sesuatu yang lain selalu tentang diri Anda. Cobalah memilih kalimat yang menghentak, misalnya kalimat "all is well" di film "3 Idiots" yang mengantarkan tiga orang mahasiswa mewujudkan mimpinya, atau cerita Laskar Pelangi yang membangkitkan semangat dan menginspirasi orang banyak.

Anda juga dapat melakukannya, tentu sesuai kisah inspiratif yang pernah Anda alami. Sebab perlu diingat, gagasan Anda memilih untuk berbicara tentang hal-hal unik tersebut menunjukkan lebih banyak tentang diri Anda. Pada akhirnya, hal ini menunjukkan minat Anda di bidang yang dituju, bukan sekadar menggambarkan hal yang biasa.

3. Jangan lupa, untuk meyakinkan penyelenggara beasiswa dengan menunjukkan dukungan dari orang-orang yang Anda hormati. Sebaiknya para profesor yang menulis surat rekomendasi untuk Anda. Minta sejumlah masukan kepada mereka untuk menuliskan isinya sebelum Anda mengirimkannya.

4. Sebaiknya, ajak juga orang lain, termasuk sahabat, keluarga, atau kekasih untuk mengoreksinya dalam hal teknis ejaan dan tata bahasa. Sepasang mata lain selain mata Anda sering menemukan sesuatu yang Anda tidak ketahui. Lebih baik lagi, jika pengoreksi yang Anda miliki cukup banyak sehingga beberapa orang dapat mengoreksi setiap pernyataan Anda.

5. Akhirnya, jangan hanya menggunakan kembali pernyataan motivasi diri yang sama untuk setiap aplikasi beasiswa yang Anda ikuti. Anda dapat mendaur ulang informasi yang sama, tetapi lebih baik ubah pernyataan diri Anda sesuai dengan program atau kampus yang Anda tuju.

Webometrics Rilis Acuan Kampus Terbaik 2012

detikcom - Jakarta, Para calon mahasiswa baru yang tengah berburu kampus mungkin bisa menjadikan ini sebagai acuan. Setelah 4ICU, kini giliran Webometrics merilis peringkat universitas terbaik dunia, termasuk kampus-kampus dari Indonesia.

Sama seperti 4ICU, ada puluhan ribu kampus di dunia yang ditelaah Webometrics. Mereka melakukan pemeringkatan kampus di dunia berdasarkan parameter digital. Misalnya, volume konten global yang terindeks di Google, dan lainnya.

Seperti detikINET kutip dari situs Webometrics, Rabu (1/8/2012), jumlah perguruan tinggi dari Indonesia yang masuk pemeringkatan edisi Juli 2012 adalah 361 kampus. Bertambah 9 kampus dari sebelumnya 352 perguruan tinggi di Januari 2012.

Webometrics menggunakan empat kriteria, yakni Presence (bobot 20%), yaitu volume konten global yang terindeks Google. Impact (50%) yaitu kualitas konten yang diukur dengan tautan eksternal dari pihak ketiga dengan data visibility-nya menggunakan dua mesin pencari yaitu Majestic SEO dan Ahrefs.

Serta Openness (15%) yaitu jumlah rich file (pdf, doc, docs, dan ppt) yang terindeks di google scholar. Terakhir, Excellence (15%) yaitu karya akademik yang dipublikasikan di jurnal international yang tergolong high-impact dengan sumber datanya diambil dari Scimago.

Berikut adalah 10 besar perguruan tinggi asal Indonesia yang meraih skor terbaik di Webometrics:
