AKCP, the world’s oldest and largest supplier of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions, has supplied a monitoring system for the mechanical room at Simon Fraser University Data Center
Simon Fraser University has constructed a new research data center. It is a 175 rack facility which houses Cedar, the world’s 50th largest supercomputer. Construction was recently completed with 107 racks fully populated. AKCP sensor solutions were chosen to monitor the data center and the mechanical room which houses the chilled water plant equipment.
In the initial phase, spot and rope water sensors have been installed in the mechanical room connected with AKCP sensorProbeX+ SNMP enabled base units. The spot and rope water sensors are placed at key points where leaks are most likely to occur. Rope water sensors are laid out along the lengths of pipes or perimeter of an enclosure. They are ideal for monitoring a larger area where leaks can occur in different locations. Spot water sensors cover a small area. Most suitably used in drip trays or small enclosed spaces. Through the AKCP monitoring system alerts are sent to the network management software so potential disaster can be averted.
Simon Fraser University plans to expand the system to the main data center floor with environmental monitoring for the 175 racks. This monitoring will include temperature and humidity sensors, and thermal mapping of cabinets to detect hotspots. This solution was supplied by Netmon, the AKCP dealer in Canada.
AKCP Wireless Tunnel sensors are built on LoRa chirp spread spectrum radio technology. They provide long-range and low-power communications with up to 10 years of battery life. It has superior characteristics when compared with other wireless sensor technologies such as Zigbee. AKCP has layered upon the LoRa hardware, their proprietary protocol known as the Wireless Tunnel. With no reliance on the internet or cloud services, it is an end-to-end private LoRa network with local reporting and alerts.
AKCP wired and Wireless Tunnel monitoring system is available now.
